Zero waste
What is Zero Waste?

To live zero waste is to stop — or drastically reduce — the amount of products that end up in landfill or recycling. This is achievable. We just need knowledge, understanding, and a little compassion for our planet. If we can make Refuse our first thought as much as possible, we can make a real difference.
Industrial pollution and the discarding of plastic waste must be tackled for the sake of all life in the ocean.

The 7 R’s of Zero Waste
Refuse. Reduce. Reuse. Repair. Rehome. Recycle. Rot. This is how we achieve zero waste. Try to live by this — stop and think before you throw away.
- 1Refuse
Confidently say no to over-packaged products and single-use plastics before they enter your life.
- 2Reduce
Simplify your life. Buy only what you need. Reduce your carbon footprint in every area you can.
- 3Reuse
Bags, jars, bottles, clothes — give everything a new lease of life. Bringing your own containers to us is a perfect example.
- 4Repair
Mend, darn, fix. Think before you throw items away — can this be repaired?
- 5Rehome
Can someone else use this? Donate to charity shops, schools, or community groups. Your junk is someone else’s treasure.
- 6Recycle
Recycle what genuinely cannot be refused, reduced or reused — but this is a last resort, not a solution.
- 7Rot
Compost your organic materials. Composting is nature’s natural process of recycling.
Why refuse rather than recycle?
The misconception about recycling is that it makes waste “okay”. In reality, recycling is a distraction from our ever-growing waste problem. Most items labelled as recyclable are actually downcycled — broken down into lesser, often unrecyclable products that will eventually end up in landfill anyway.
The message in the zero-waste world is simple: recycle when you genuinely have no other option, but if you follow the five R’s before it, your recycling pile will be considerably smaller.
Can I make a difference?
Yes, absolutely. Just by making a few day-to-day changes and keeping your 7 R’s in mind, you’ll make a massive difference. Being as zero-waste as you can is about taking responsibility for what you do — looking at the bigger effect your actions have on the world. It’s not about being perfect. It’s about helping our planet heal.
Ready to start your zero-waste journey?
A great first step is simply bringing a container to our shop and filling it up with something you’d normally buy in a plastic bag. Easy.
